A Trip To The Dermatologist

Guessing by the title of today's post, I'm sure you can guess where I headed this morning for a 9 o'clock appointment... thats right- the dermatologist! I made this appointment a few weeks ago hoping to get some advice on getting my skin clearer and to a more even complexion. Let me preface by saying I don't have horrible skin by any means and I think the doctor was a bit confused by my visit in general but she was very helpful none the less! Heres a recrap of how my appointment went and also some new products I will be trying over the coarse of the next few weeks/months.

Prior to my visit I used Aveeno Foaming Cleanser
I was extremely happy when the doctor said I could continue to use this cleanser AND that it's often one she recommends people to use.

I also had been using the Oil of Olay exfoliating brush every other day
This the doctor said to nix, as it could actually be causing more harm to my skin then good

New products:
So I know this is totally weird and I promise I was just as leery but she said that Head and Shoulders is a great cleanser for not only your face but for your body! Being someone that works out, I am always looking for a new body wash that will leave me feeling sweat free and clean before I get into bed.

Next she gave me a perscription for Retin-A. (The above product is the generic brand) While Im excited to try this product, Im also extremely nervous and have heard mixed reviews. Anyone out there a retin-a user and have any advice? The doctor told me to apply a pea sized amount before bed, twice a week.

Next she prescribed Clindamycin which I am to use in the morning underneath my moisturizer, sunscreen, and makeup. Im not too familiar with this product but would love to hear if others have tried it!

So there you have it! I will definitely be letting everyone know how the next few days go!

Yours truly,
Em

Hey Emily. I have used some of these products on my face in the past. The tretinoin gel did wonders at getting my skin clear a few years ago when I used it. For the first few weeks of use, it can make your skin really dry and peel some. Don't stop using it, though! It takes a month or two, but your skin will get used to it and look better than ever. You just will need to use a good moisturizer in the beginning for the dryness. Once my skin cleared up, I stopped using it and used other products to maintain my skin.

The reason Head and Shoulders works great for clear skin is that it contains zinc pyrinthione, which is actually a great skin clearing product! I use something called Noble Formula soap to wash my face with because of that same ingredient. It works great!

As for the clindamycin, I use Duac gel which has clindamycin in it. It works wonders for me!

Thanks for sharing, and I hope you get great results from your new skin care products!

New follower! So glad I found your blog. I've actually tried both Retin-A and Clindamycin. The Retin-A dried out my sensitive skin a lot so I would definitely stick with a pea sized amount, even though that seems like nothing. The good thing is I did think it worked to clear my skin. It just made it hard to apply makeup when you are peeling. I never felt like the clindamycin worked super well but it might work better for some than others. Just my thoughts :-)

I don't use Retin-A, but I do use a retinol, and like others have said, it can make your face feel very dry and peel-y for the first couple of weeks! But once you get past that initial stage, the product is amazing! It's great for age prevention and skin cell turnover, which means clear, even-toned, wrinkle and acne free skin :)

Good luck & keep us posted on how it goes!!

I second what everyone else already has said! Using a pea sized amount is definitely key. Cant wait to here how it helps!
